ESD Protection for USB PD Systems

test
As USB Power Delivery technology has evolved from PD 3.0 to PD 3.2, its power capacity has expanded from 100W to 240W, enabling high-power applications such as laptops, monitors, and industrial equipment. This advancement places greater demands on ESD protection components, especially in ensuring stability and safety under high-voltage Vbus conditions.

Recommended ESD Components for USB Vbus Protection

1.Select a VRWM Rating Above the Maximum Operating Voltage

  • For SPR mode: Choose VRWM ≥ 24V (supports up to 20V Vbus)

  • For EPR mode: Choose VRWM ≥ 52V (supports up to 48V Vbus)

  • Prevents unintended clamping or device damage under high-voltage conditions

2.Ensure Compliance with IEC Standards

  • Recommended: IEC 61000-4-2 Level 4 (±8kV contact / ±15kV air discharge)

  • For industrial or outdoor applications, consider additional surge protection (IEC 61000-4-5)

3.Use Compact Packages and Optimize Placement

  • Preferred packages: SOD-123, SOD-323, DFN1610, etc.

  • Place ESD components as close as possible to the USB Type-C connector to minimize parasitic inductance

4.Prioritize Low Leakage and Fast Response

  • Leakage current in the nanoampere range

  • Response time <1ns for effective transient suppression

  • Low clamping voltage to protect downstream circuitry

5.Select Components Based on Power Mode

  • For SPR (up to 100W): e.g., CPDUT24VMUHT-HF

  • For EPR (up to 240W): e.g., CPDW45VMUHT-HF

Comchip has specifically developed a range of ESD/EOS protection components tailored for USB Vbus protection, offering solutions across various voltage levels to meet the demands of PD 3.0, PD 3.1, and PD 3.2 application scenarios.

Comchip has also developed a series of high-IPP, compact protection components in DFN1610 packages, ideal for space-constrained power systems. For 5V applications, the CPDUT5VMHT-HF offers an IPP rating of up to 140A; for 9V, the CPDUT10VMUAHT-HF supports up to 160A; for 15V, the CPDUT15VMUHT-HF reaches up to 60A; and for 24V, the CPDUT24VMUHT-HF provides up to 75A. In addition, for EPR systems, COMCHI offers corresponding high-IPP solutions for 28V, 36V, and 48V applications, including CPDW28VMUHT-HF, CPDW36VMUHT-HF, and CPDW45VMUHT-HF.
